Avoiding the pay toll highway, Matt and I stumbled upon the hilltop town of Buje. We parked in an empty lot at the bottom of the hill and hiked our way into town. To our surprise, the town was in festive mode celebrating this year’s grape harvest.
Local merchants where selling olive oil, honey, lavender, soaps, candles, woodwork and of course wine!
Make shift wine bars where erected through out the town. Everyone and their dog was tasting wine and eating grapes.
Fried cabbage, sausages and pork chops on the grill.
We turned a corner and found this, lovely ladies stomping on grapes along to “umpa” music played by a live band.
Can you say National Lampoon Europe vacation!?!
The whole city is celebrating the grape harvest. Wine and food everywhere!
On September 8th we left the wonderful city of Rijeka and headed south towards Pula. The scenery out our window improved with every kilometer driven.
On our way, we stopped at the city of Opatija for a quick swim in the Adriatic sea. The water was extremely salty and very warm.
That night we parked on the edge of the road, check out our view!
We had stocked up our fridge at the fish market in Rijeka and that night I made a seafood feast.
